3.5 Tonne Sprinter From Pickles Bibra Lake to a Tight Side Yard in Waikiki
Operator: Chris
- Tricky Access
Chathuranga bought a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter at the Pickles auction yard in Bibra Lake and needed it picked up straight from the auctions and taken home to Waikiki.
The van's windscreen is smashed, so it was never going to be driven home. Chris loaded it onto the tilt tray at Bibra Lake, all 3.5 tonnes of it.
The drop-off was the hard part. The van had to go down a narrow side passage between the house and the fence, with very little room either side, as the photos show.
Chris set it down with what he calls a crab walk: the van's back wheels go down onto the ground, the tray is worked up and down, and the truck drives out from under it, so the van ends up on the ground where it needs to be. In his words, it was "one of the tightest crab walks I've done with a 3.5 ton Sprinter on the back."
Next for the van: a new windscreen, then an inspection before it can be licensed and driven.
Why This Job Needed a Tilt Tray
A tilt tray tilts down to the ground, so a vehicle can be set down exactly where it is needed, even in a space this tight. Chris's crab walk, step by step and with a diagram, is in the full guide.
